I really like the ability to cross-post so easily from Multiply to Facebook, but I've often wondered what my friends on Facebook think of it and why they're not willing to join Multiply to see the things that I cross-post but that are set to private.

I received a couple of responses from them recently and I thought I'd share them here along with my own reply.

The alert they are talking about is the notifications pop ups. When someone likes your post, you usually get a notification, though I'm the first to admit that Facebook is not infallible and does miss them on occasion.

Where is that? When I look in the upper right hand corner on FB all I see is "requests".

Ah, I see it now. There's something you have to click on in the lower right. So it's basically hidden unless you know to go look there.

It's like another feed, eh?

it is like another feed. it does show a red thingummy when you've got new notifications, but if you didn't know to look in the lower right, you wouldn't know it's there... and if you rely on email alerts then you're never going to see that.

and like I said the other day, I found that I got no notification when someone "liked" one of my photos, so it's far from perfect.

yeah, it was your post that got me to looking around for some sort of alert, but i didn't see anything.

yes, it's tiny and hidden, it's really not the most obvious alert :)

Meg, Facebook sucks. Badly. But it's a social networking site. The teaming masses aren't there because of the sweet app. It's the people.

If they teamed here, then the people would all be here too. I don't think you can just say it's the people. There's something more than that. The hype? The apps? The ability to find that guy you had a crush on 20 years ago? *shrug* I dunno. But I don't get it. Why do the masses tend to team towards suckiness? And what does that mean for democracy?

lol... you've been on this earth how long and you're only figuring this out?

most people don't think very much. it's not about having brains or not having brains, it's about not taking the time to use them. most people just do whatever seems easiest and least painful. if everybody is on fb, then the easiest thing is to join fb and do what everyone is doing. why think about it? why weigh up your options? joining fb is dead easy, being on fb requires very little effort. that's all there is to it.

did you ever watch this video that linda posted?

(hey, I knew one of these days I'd find a use for that inbox option to show a videos link on the side - no way could I have remembered who posted this...)

what kills me is that they seemed to have no problem joining facebook, but when it comes to seeing my content by joining multiply, they "don't want to have to join another site."

i have two close friends who have joined multiply and never posted a single thing. but they still check in on my posts and i really appreciate that they were willing to join just to see how i'm doing. that says a lot to me. if we're friends, and you're interested in hearing my thoughts and seeing my kids grow and knowing what's going on with me, then joining "another site" is really a rather small price to pay. especially when i'm willing to pay that price for them. (actually, i was on facebook years and years before any of them. but i'd still join just for them if i wasn't already on there. ... it's hard to find a social networking/photo sharing/video sharing site that i haven't already joined at some point.)

yeah, i remember that. thankfully it doesn't apply to me. ... ... ;-)

(actually, you think too much about it and you start to wonder if you do anything of your own free will after all.)

yes, I know what you mean about people saying they don't want to join another site, you'd think you were asking them to give blood or something. I also have friends who are here on multiply just to read my posts - some of them don't even reply here, don't know why but one prefers to email me and say: I saw your post about such and such... but anyway, at least they're reading my posts, they care enough to know what's going on in my life. and really, is it such a hardship to sign up for a multiply account? (warming up into my jewish mama kvetching routine...)

i love multiply too! facebook sucks big time (although i have one) but multiply is the best! facebook offers too much publicity and it's the worst site i've ever joined! talk about privacy.. :))
