I'm going through a massive stack of papers and magazines that has accumulated in my bedroom. Among the pile was an old WIRED mag (update: it's the November 2004 issue) that included a CD. It's entitled "WIRED: Rip. Sample. Mash. Share." so i figured that i'd be obedient and share, even if i don't Rip. Sample. or ... Mash? (what's that?)

Beneath the title is says: "Cool Music Distributed Under A Creative Commons License. Some Right Reserved."

Compress, maybe? Maybe they didn't want people to be wasting space by throwing raw audio files all over the net uncompressed? (Also maybe a pun on "mash potato"?)

mashing is what you do when you take two songs and sample them together to create something new. go to mashup.com if you wanna hear a few examples -- an old classic IS NIN's "closer" and the Spice Girls "wannabe" -- I also heard a really good one using "dust in the wind" and Korn's "falling away from me".

I'll download these in a mo, but I'm betting that at least some of the tracks were chosen for their compatibility in creating mashups.

WOW it looks lika you can do just about anything these days with a PC and a knowledge of software programs. As for me I'm working on the knowledge part.hehehehe
